The story begins in 1963, in San Antonio, Texas. Julia Sinclair's life fractures at fifteen when her father is murdered in a random act of violence. Though time and faith eventually pull her from grief, catastrophe strikes again years later when an accident leaves her blind just as she stands on the threshold of love and marriage. Convinced that her blindness will reduce the man she loves to a caretaker rather than a partner, Julia decides to sever her engagement to Adam Griffin.
