Henry James offers a sharp analysis of New York middle-class society in the last quarter of the 19th century through the relationships of four characters: Austin Sloper, a distinguished physician who is nonetheless cruel and cold toward his daughter; his sister, Lavinia Penniman; his daughter, Catherine; and Catherine's suitor, Morris Townsend. In this way the author dissects the social conventions that prevent the expression of true feelings and that sometimes equate goodness with stupidity and exalt malice disguised as wit.
