War Without Footprints: Plausible Deniability and the Future of Proxy Warfare - Hardcover

by Andrew L. Peek (Author)

War Without Footprints is a groundbreaking study of how states use proxy forces to shift the balance of power while avoiding the visible costs of direct intervention. At the heart of this strategy is plausible deniability, the ability to act without clear attribution, which allows sponsors to delay balancing responses and reduce the risk of escalation. Drawing on case studies from Russia in Georgia and Ukraine, Iran and Hezbollah, Pakistan and the Haqqani network, and Saudi Arabia in Chechnya, the book develops a new model for proxy warfare that emphasizes distance, deniability, and indirect control. It also examines the Trump administration's 2025 peace efforts and how bilateral diplomacy sought to manage asymmetric conflict through deniable means. War Without Footprints explains how modern power is often most effectively projected when its source remains deliberately obscured. This is essential reading for scholars, policymakers, and anyone interested in military strategy, strategic effectiveness, or global security.
