The inspiration for the main character was Vincent's son, Joshua Michael or Mikey, who was a middle-schooler at the time. The story is mostly fictitious and takes place in a world where all of the characters are shoes. Mikey embarks in a journey of self-discovery while facing fears that can seem terrifying for any teenager.
