by David Dobson (Author)
Scotland and Flanders had a long trading and settlement connection from the 11th to the 19th centuries through textiles, wool, coal, and fish. Flemish textile craftsmen settled in Scotland, while Scottish merchants sent raw materials such as wool and fish to Flanders. By the early 19th century, Scottish soldiers of fortune settled in the Low Countries and fought with or against the Spanish and the French.
