The Southern Patriot was a newspaper that began publication in Charleston, South Carolina in 1815 and was published through 1848. A unique research issue for the state of South Carolina is that vital records were not officially keep until 1911. So for the researcher, you must turn to newspapers in order to locate those elusive vital records such as: births, deaths, & marriages. This book consists of the marriage and death notices as they are found in this newspaper. Although the Southern patriot was published in Charleston, the marriage and death notices are not limited to this area, but encompass the enite United States east of the Mississippi River. This volume will be extremely useful genealogical reference as the obituarie and marriage notices of this newspaper are given in great detail, often including dates of birth, parents and family names, as well as places of residence.
