During a weekend visit to Vienna a soldier from the hills of East Tennessee met a girl from Rio de Janeiro on a tour bus in the Vienna Woods. For the G.I. it was love almost at first sight. They met again in Paris a months later and he proposed. She said yes. Army colleagues and some family members urged the soldier not to marry her. "She won't last two months when you go back to Tennessee," they predicted. They married in Vienna a year after that meeting. After nearly 70 years of marriage, their love is even stronger. In his career as a journalist and hers as a language teacher, they have lived in Tennessee, Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware, and in Germany, Brazil and Puerto Rico, raising a family of five children, four boys and one girl. This is a chronicle of that meeting and the beginnings of their journey through life together.
