by Kristin Swenson (Author)
The palace of King Astyages's Media is no place for a prince. When buried secrets come to light and the king's murderous paranoia strips the boy Cyrus of everything he has known and loved, Cyrus II (later, "the Great") must overcome hidden resentments, rage, and grief to forge alliances and begin again. Part of a series of historical fiction by an award-winning author and scholar of ancient Near Eastern history, A Falcon Takes Flight follows the boy Cyrus from the dark luxury and pillared halls of Astyages's Media ringing with suspicion and intrigue to the impoverished vassal kingdom of Parsa (the early heart of Persia), itself held captive by an evil force. To the west, in Babylonia, Nebuchadnezzar's queen Amytis (Cyrus's aunt) navigates accusations of treason, while Cyrus runs afoul of the most noble Parsan clan, the Achaemenids. Adventure and romance sweeten a bitter fate as Cyrus reckons with who he is and the person he wants to become.
