Range maps show the distribution of each species. Of particular interest in this time of heightened awareness of environmental degradation are the many references to threatened and endangered species and the effects of deteriorating water quality on their survival.

Fred C. Rohde is a biologist with the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries. Rudolf G. Arndt is professor of biology at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. David G. Lindquist and James F. Parnell are professors of biology at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
